Here are comments from the adjudicator, Emily Duncan:
- "Wonderful imaginative quality in this very well-written script, which offers beautiful theatrical opportunities in performance. This is a play that would appeal to all age groups with its playful rendering of the natural world."
- "Of the 25 submissions, the stand-out for me was Rabbit Warns Gannet. This writing is both a beautifully playful and solemn rendering and exploration of the natural world and our fragile and interconnected ecosystems. While it is specifically placed in Aotearoa-New Zealand, this is a work that would also have wider appeal. A clear sense of theatrical staging is forefront, without overshadowing the play’s content and characters. The opening image of Kori the Gannet bouncing on a trampoline is an immediate invitation for audiences of all ages to suspend disbelief. For these reasons I have awarded Rabbit Warns Gannet first place, and I look forward to (hopefully) hearing of a production of this script in the not too-distant future."
