Kelly is seated with pen and paper. Roy is dictating a letter.
ROY
Dear Alex.
Kelly writes “Dear Alex.”
I hope you’re well.
Kelly writes “I hope you’re well.”
I’m not.
Kelly doesn’t write this. Roy tries again.
I’ve had a stroke.
Kelly writes “I’ve had a stroke.”
I’m no longer able to form sentences.
Kelly doesn’t write this. Roy tries again.
Roy is helping me write this.
Kelly writes “Roy is helping me write this.”
He tries to imagine what I want to say. When he gets reasonably close, I copy the words down.
Kelly gestures frustration.
Or not. Anyway, Alex, I just want to say…
Kelly looks at Roy with expectation.
I love you.
Kelly writes “I love you.”
Not very original or personalized, I know. But it will have to do.
Kelly presses Roy’s hand fondly.
Roy’s hopeless.
Kelly writes “Roy’s hopeless.”
Lights fade to black.
