Review
“Enemies on a Date" by Rex McGregor is a play about two bloggers who agree to meet. Their views and lives are openly expressed in the world of bloggers and their followers. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum on most issues, and have no problem harshly criticizing bloggers who have adversarial blogs. It becomes apparent that the two characters Briar, a young woman, and Zane, a young man, do not agree on anything, but the dialogue hints that a mutual respect exist. Apparently, they both possess a confidence and proficiency in “blog communication,” and are quite opinionated in their unyielding beliefs. Why they agree to go on a date, is the big question, and the focus of this play?
Meeting your presumed arch enemy is brave. The two characters are strangers to each other except when they slam each other’s blog. The plot is cagy. They are both obviously inquisitive about their antagonistic opponent. I sensed the uneasiness from the written dialogue, but their intrigue remains on the forefront. An unintentional game quickly begins, where each character works at one upping the other. They both have wins, as well as loses. Who will triumph in their game remains a challenge, until the conclusion? The end is clever and quite a surprise!
“Enemies on a Date” would work well on the stage. The characters are well defined, the dialogue is smart and fun to read.
